Where did the French robillard family come from? What is the French coat of arms/family crest? When did the robillard family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The ancient surname of robillard is from the Normandy region of France. This surname came from the Germanic given name Robert. This name is composed of the elements hrod, meaning glory, and berht, meaning illustrious or brilliant. There were a great number of spelling variations in French surnames. One reason for this was the wide variety of cultural influences present in France during the early development of the French Language. The many spelling variations of the name include Robillard, Robilard, Robillart, Robilart, Robilleau, Robileau, Robilliard, Robiliard, Robilliart, Robiliart, Robillot, Robilot, Robellot, Robelot and many more.

First found in Normandy. France was active as a cultural leader in the early 16th century. One particular area in which they lead was the exploration of the New World. The explorers, like Jacques Cartier in 1534, led the way to North America. Champlain, in 1608, made the first of twenty voyages to France to attract settlers and brought the first migrant in 1617. By 1675, there were 7000 French in Quebec, and the French Acadian presence in the Maritimes had reached 500. The French founded Lower Canada, thus becoming one of the two great founding nations of Canada. The family name robillard has made many distinguished contributions in France and New France to the world of science, culture, religion, and education. Amongst the settlers in North America with this distinguished name robillard were Claude Robillard who migrated from Brittany to Quebec in 1664. For more information on the last name robillard, the PDF Surname History is available for purchase as well as other products.

Robillard – History

con un comentario

Surname: Robilliard

It is not often that we have the pleasure of researching a genuine 17th century Huguenot refugee surname, but Robilliard certainly falls into the category. In most cases these French names have become anglicised over the centuries often to the point of total obliteration of the original spelling. The Huguenot refugees often deliberately changed the spelling partly because to be French in the 17th and 18th Centuries laid one open to abuse, and partly because the British could not spell, and usually registered the name in a ’sounds like’ form.

Robilliard’ is a developed form of Robert, and essentially means ‘Little Robert’ or perhaps ‘Son of Robert’ the spelling in France being usually Robillard or Rebillard, as shown in the first recording. Since the 18th century the name has been prominent in Guernsey, and is also presumably of Huguenot origins, although what may be the first recording, that of James Robillard at Torteval, on October 10th 1739, is much later than in London. There Anne Robiliart, the daughter of Robert and Marie, was christened at Threadneedle Street French Church on June 6th 1641, whilst later on November 9th 1717, Susanna Robilliard married Charles King at St Benets, Pauls Wharf, London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Joachim Robillard, which was dated June 1st 1541, christened at Amboise, Indre-et-Loire, France, during the reign of King Francis 1 of France, 1515 – 1547. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to “develop” often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Durante el siglo XIX, inmigraron a Chile dos hermanos franceses, los que se instalaron en la zona central del país, que previamente habían llegado a América del sur vía Buenos Aires. Uno de ellos volvió a Argentina y se estableció en Mendoza, donde tuvo 25 hijos, el otro se quedó en Chile. El apellido Roubillard al ser homófono en el castellano a Rubilar se registró como tal.
